Important ingredients in cat food
Important ingredients for making your own cat food
Cats are carnivores and require a balanced diet high in protein, with some fat and very few carbohydrates. The most important components are:
- Protein-rich meat : Supports muscle development and the immune system and is the main ingredient in every cat food. Meat contains amino acids that cats must obtain through their diet. These are particularly important for their bodies, such as tauri and arginine .
- Carbohydrates in moderation : They provide energy, but should only be consumed in small amounts.
- Healthy fats : Provide energy and support skin and coat health.
- Important vitamins and minerals : Vitamins A, D, calcium and phosphorus, etc. are among the essential nutrients.
- Sufficient water : An adequate water supply is particularly important for cats, as they are prone to urinary tract diseases.
Tip: Did you know that cats can produce their own vitamin C ? Unlike us humans, they don't need an additional source. So, if you want to make your own cat food, you don't need to add any vitamin C. Only older cats or those with a fever might benefit from a small extra dose!
Forbidden ingredients when making your own cat food
Some foods are dangerous for cats and should not be included in their food:
- Onions and garlic : These ingredients can cause anemia in cats and are therefore absolutely taboo when making your own cat food.
- Spices : Salt, sugar, and soy sauce put a strain on your cat's kidneys.
- Chocolate and caffeine : These substances are toxic to the heart and nervous system of cats. Learn more in this article about toxic foods for cats .
- Bones : Small, splintering bones in particular can lead to digestive problems and injuries.
