Important ingredients for making your own cat food
Cats are carnivores and require a balanced diet high in protein, some fat, and very few carbohydrates. The most important components are:
- Protein-rich meat : Supports muscle development and the immune system and is a key component of any cat diet. Meat contains amino acids that cats must obtain through their diet. These are particularly important for their bodies, such as taurine and arginine .
- Carbohydrates in moderation : Provide energy, but should only be given in small amounts.
- Healthy fats : Provide energy and support skin and coat health.
- Important vitamins and minerals : Vitamin A, D as well as calcium and phosphorus etc. are among the essential nutrients.
- Adequate water : Adequate water supply is especially important for cats as they are prone to urinary tract diseases.
Tip: Did you know that cats can produce their own vitamin C ? Unlike humans, they don't need an additional source. So, if you want to make your own cat food, you don't need to add any vitamin C. A small extra serving can only be helpful in old age or when a cat has a fever!
Forbidden ingredients when making your own cat food
Some foods are dangerous for cats and should not be included in their food:
- Onions and garlic : These ingredients can cause anemia in cats and are therefore absolutely taboo when making your own cat food.
- Spices : Salt, sugar and soy sauce put a strain on your cat's kidneys.
